Here are terms often used in website development and SEO.
- Blocks and the Block Editor – the (new) native way to build posts with WordPress content blocks. Previously referred to as the Gutenberg editor. Fully implemented in December 2018 with the release of WordPress 5.0.
- Blog – a series of articles (posts) arranged by date. Helpful for SEO.
- Child Theme -a theme where you should do all customization. Child themes inherit (derive) components from their Parent theme, allowing you to periodically update the parent theme.
- Classic Editor Plugin – adds back the TinyMCE editor for managing WordPress content, versus the Block Editor.
- CMS – Content Management System, a system to manage your website, common CMS’s include WordPress (over 35% in 01/2020), Joomla, WIX, Squarespace, Weebly. “Content” refers to the components of your website like menus, images, text, buttons, videos, icons, forms, etc. Versus building your website with code or ASP.net.
- CSS – Cascading style sheets, instructs browsers on how to style web pages. The term cascading refers to that instruction from multiple style sheets are combined, and the last styles applied to take precedence.
- Custom Post Type (CPT) – a post type different from blog posts, pages, or users. Common custom post types are Events, Products, and Food Menu Items. Custom post types may be added by themes, plugins, or custom coding.
- Domain Authority – Credibility of your website and it’s content, built up over time.
- Editor – the internal system to edit website content
- Footer – a consistent section that usually appears at the bottom of all website pages
- Framework – a set of tools and standards for building websites. WordPress frameworks often include a Parent Theme.
- Gutenberg Editor – See Blocks entry
- Hamburger Menu – mobile presentation of the website navigation menu, typically three horizontal lines, that expands to show menu items on click or hover
- Header – a consistent heading usually appearing at the top of all website pages, and often containing logo and navigation menu. The header and footer can vary by page.
- Host, Hosting Plan –
- HTML – hypertext markup language, used by browsers to build web pages
- Keywords – the words and phrases that searchers enter into search engines, also called “search queries.”
- Landing Page – a page built most often for conversion. Landing pages may not offer navigation to other parts of your website.
- Metadata – additional information about your website content. Definition: a set of data that describes and gives information about other data.
- Meta Description – information about your post to be displayed in the SERP. The meta description appears below the SEO title and the URL. Best to phrase the meta description as a “call to action” and be aware that it may be limited to displaying 160 characters.
- Page Builder – a way to build website pages with modules. Often “drag and drop” and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). Elementor, Beaver Builder, WP Bakery, Visual Composer, and DIVI are a few of the most popular WordPress page builders.
- Parent Theme – a theme that is referred to by a Child Theme. Child themes inherit components from Parent themes. Parent themes may be updated to keep theme functional with new WordPress releases, to etc.
- Permalink – the “permanent” link to your post (page, blog post, product, event, etc.). The WordPress permalink structure can be defined in settings.
- Post – most often refers to a blog post. Can also refer to adding (posting) information to your website, in the form of a Post, Page, User, Product, or other custom post types.
- Plugin – adds functionality to your website, Plugins often add Widgets for displaying information.
- PPC – Pay Per Click advertising, you get billed when people click on your ad, often using Google Adwords and Facebook advertising.
- SEO – Seach Engine Optimization, improving your appearance in organic (regular) search results
- SEO Title – Title of result appearing in SERP
- SERP – the Search Engine Results Page
- Shared Hosting – Economical website hosting where resources are shared with other customers and their webstites
- SMO – Social Media Optimization
- Structured Data – Presenting website content to search engines per the specifications of Schema.org. Several WordPress plugins help with this, like Schema Pro and even Yoast.
- Tagline – a brief description of the website, optimally 60 characters,
- Theme – template for styling a website, includes many components, required for most WordPress websites
- VPS Hosting – Faster website hosting on a virtual private server (VPS)
- Widget – a way to add visual content to your website, like calendars, contact forms, etc. Plugins often create widgets for display.
- Widget Area – configured areas for displaying widgets on your website
